Drag It Up culminates in a sparse and haunting ode to an Austin pal who was killed by a drunk driver, and while a "tribute" song could induce eye-rolling and saccharine gagging, Old 97's keep it simple and heartfelt, and it ends the evening perfectly. Overall, through the last decade it seems as though Old 97's haven't lost a whit of their spark, and while they may have traded in some Price: $

In his liner notes to this album, Old 97's guitarist Ken Bethea writes, "When I think of the Old 97's, the thing that makes me the most proud is that we've always been a smoking live band."Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing the Old 97's on-stage knows that Bethea isn't just blowing his own horn when he says that, and this double-disc set offers the hard evidence to back him up.

May 06,  · Old 97’s Drag It Up Release date: July 27, by Ken Bethea, lead guitarist 11 years in, I still can’t quite believe what I’ve been doing with my life. We just finished recording our sixth album, Drag It Up. It’s the first for our new label, New West Records. After tinkering with our limits on the previous five releases, I think we’ve settled in with what we do best on Drag It Up.

It's a mellow CD but they manage to rock things up on songs like 'Won't Be Home No More', 'New Kid', and 'Friends Forever'. While other alt-country bands are removing twang from their sound in order to garner new fans and sell more records, The Old 97's went ahead and made an album for the longtime fans who have supported them throughout the years/5(47).

That being said, Drag It Up truly feels like a hodgepodge of Old 97's songs. Very little consistency as a whole and a few songs are simply weak. Production sounds somewhat flat and lacking dynamics. Overall not bad per se, just doesn't live up .
