The Sound of Silence is a studio album by Carmen McRae for Atlantic Records with an orchestra primarily under the musical direction of Shorty Rogers. The first four tracks recorded on June 26, were arranged and conducted by Jimmy Jones.

This is a soft jazz treatment of some sturdy 60's era pop songs. The arrangements aren't terribly ambitious but the solos by Bud Shank and Chet Baker are undeniably worthy. One caveat: the CD is only 25 minutes long and should have contained another album from these artists. I originally had the vinyl version and it is nice to have this music /5(13).

Bud Shank takes on the sounds of The Beatles – and a whole host of other 60s pop stars as well – all with results that are as jazzy as they are groovy! The album's one of a few that Bud cut for Liberty in this format – alto and flute spread out over fuller backings from Bob Florence, a great arranger who knows how to make things swing by bringing in some wonderful 60s touches!

Possibly one of the best pressings (vinyl, g), with the title track making it a must-buy for fans of this style of music. Listening on a hifi system, it is hard to believe this album is 50 years old, originally recorded in , but loved enough to have been preserved for decades/5().
